One of the things we’re most proud of at NLM Events isn’t just the people who attend — it’s where we bring them together.
Newcastle has an incredible hospitality scene, and over the years we’ve been lucky to work with venues that truly “get it.” Places with character, warmth, attentive staff, great food and drinks — and most importantly, the ability to offer private spaces where conversations can flow freely and connections can form naturally.
Because let’s be honest: chemistry doesn’t thrive under fluorescent lights and shouted small talk.
Why Venue Choice Matters
For lifestyle events, the venue sets the tone before a single word is spoken.
We look for spaces that offer:
- A welcoming, professional team
- A relaxed but polished atmosphere
- Quality food and drinks worth lingering over
- And private areas where guests feel comfortable being themselves
When people feel safe, unhurried, and respected, the conversations go deeper, laughter comes easier, and those little sparks of chemistry have room to breathe.
Of course, not every great venue is the right fit for lifestyle events. Some otherwise excellent spaces simply don’t offer the kind of private or semi-private areas that allow guests to speak openly and comfortably, while others are designed more for fast-paced dining than relaxed social connection. There are also venues we genuinely love that, sadly, come with price tags that would push ticket costs well beyond what we feel is fair or accessible. We’re very conscious of keeping our events attainable for people who are curious, new, or easing their way into the lifestyle — not just those with deep pockets. Balancing atmosphere, discretion, and affordability is always part of the equation, and it’s a line we work hard to walk thoughtfully.
Here’s a little love letter to some of the local favourites we’ve used — and why they’ve worked so well for events where chemistry, community and quality really matter.
🥃 Bartholomew’s
4.5•Restaurant and bar
Stepping into Bartholomew’s is like stepping into another era — rich chandeliers, moody 1920s-inspired design and tiered theatre-style balconies set the stage. Housed in the historic old Methodist Mission building on King Street, Bartholomew’s blends heritage with contemporary sophistication. Bartholomew’s
The drink list is legendary, featuring one of Newcastle’s largest whisky and craft spirit selections, carefully curated cocktails, and seasonal menus that beautifully complement relaxed social gatherings. Bartholomew’s Staff here are more than bartenders — they’re storytellers who elevate each experience, whether you’re after a whisky flight, a signature cocktail, or a share plate that surprises everyone at the table. Bartholomew’s
We’ve loved how Bartholomew’s historic grandeur and refined yet casual feel create the perfect backdrop for meaningful conversations and laughter that just won’t quit.
🍻 Meantime On Beaumont — Hamilton
4.2•Restaurant and bar
Meantime sits right in the heart of Beaumont Street’s lively Hamilton strip — a neighbourhood known for its culture, community events and hospitality. Beaumont Street is a fusion of flavours and experiences, and Meantime fits right in. Newcastle Live
This urban-chic bar and restaurant brings a welcoming vibe to every event. Guests love the house-brewed beers, wood-fired tacos and relaxed ambience — perfect for meet-ups that feel casual, social and unhurried. Newcastle Live Beyond weekdays and weekends, Meantime often intersects with Beaumont Street festivals and neighbourhood happenings, making it a fun place to stay after an event and explore Newcastle’s dynamic West End culture. New Annual
Their team goes out of their way to make every guest feel at ease, which is a vibe we’ve always appreciated — especially for first-timers looking for a comfortable space to hang out and connect.
🥂 Earp Distilling Co. — Carrington
4.8•Distillery & Event venue
This one has quickly become a favourite. Earp is more than a bar or distillery — it’s a fully immersive craft spirits destination with roots in Newcastle going back generations. Earp Distilling Co.
Their Barrel Hall and adaptable event spaces are ideal for gatherings where people want personalised service, great food, and plenty to talk about. With seasonal menus, attentive staff and bar experiences built around their own handcrafted gin and spirits, Earp brings a relaxed yet elevated energy to group events. Earp Distilling Co.
Whether you’re enjoying a long lunch, a grazing board with drinks, or a private tasting, Earp’s hospitality team makes every guest feel seen — and that’s what great connection is all about.
🍷 Customs House Hotel — Wharf Road
4.2•Pub & event venue
Right on the foreshore, Customs House brings Newcastle’s waterfront charm and heritage look to life. Built in classic Renaissance Revival style and re-imagined as a hotel and restaurant, this landmark blends history with a lively local feel. Wikipedia
Here, guests enjoy open beer gardens, comfortable lounges, and roomy private spaces that are perfect for mingling and chatting away in your own zone. Whether you’re here for a casual drink or sitting down for one of their wonderful long lunches or dinners, Customs House has that warm, inviting atmosphere that makes everyone feel welcome.
It’s also a place many guests revisit long after our events — whether for the view, the wine, or the people you met here the first time around.
🍸 The Basement at The Grand Hotel — Church Street
Tucked under one of Newcastle’s iconic historic pubs, The Grand Hotel’s basement space (often referred to by locals as The Underground) has that vibe that feels like a secret waiting to be discovered. Newcastle Living
With moody lighting, a speakeasy feel, and a crew that knows how to deliver great drinks and great service, the space naturally draws people into deeper conversation. The contrast of heritage architecture with modern touches creates the kind of intimate setting where guests don’t just chat — they connect.
Even if you don’t stay upstairs, the basement bar is an experience in itself — a favourite spot to extend the night long after the official event wraps.
🍹 Bar Mellow — Hunter Street (Now Closed)
We’d be remiss to talk about memorable venues without giving a nod to Bar Mellow, which sadly closed its doors. Bar Mellow had that rare combination of cool vibe, friendly staff and an atmosphere where people could just be themselves. People still reminisce about the easy conversations, the music, and the energy it brought to our socials. While it’s gone, its influence on how we choose spaces lives on. We truly hope to see new owners reopen and would love to host another event there in the future!
Why We Celebrate Local Venues
At NLM Events, we’re not just booking function rooms — we’re curating experiences.
We choose places where:
- the staff remember your name, not just your order
- the food and drinks spark conversation
- the atmosphere feels like a getaway without leaving town
- and the private areas let you drop the guard and truly connect
And the best part? Many of these venues are places you’ll want to visit again — whether that’s for date night, a brunch with friends, or your own independent lifestyle adventures.
We’re always on the lookout for new spaces that meet our criteria — venues that value professionalism, discretion, atmosphere, and genuine hospitality.
We’re excited to say we already have a few new venues lined up for 2026, and we can’t wait to share them with you. Different spaces bring different energy, and that variety keeps things fresh, interesting, and inspiring.
Because when the room feels right, everything else follows.
Here’s to great staff, great spaces, great conversations — and continuing to showcase the best of Newcastle, one unforgettable evening at a time. 🍸✨
